Moissanite itself is one of the most stable gems known. It will not cloud, fade, crack from heat or change color under your perfume. The part of your ring that ages is the 925 sterling silver and the plating on top of it. This guide is mostly about protecting the metal.
Wear it smart
Take your ring off before: washing dishes (dish soap leaves a film that dulls the stone), applying lotion or perfume, swimming in a chlorinated pool (chlorine attacks the copper in sterling silver), and working out (a bench press knuckle is a real way to bend a prong). Wear it to dinner, to work, to a wedding. It is a daily ring; it is not a shower ring.
Clean it once a week, five minutes
Fill a small bowl with warm water and one drop of mild dish soap. Soak the ring for two minutes. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, especially under the stone where skin oils collect. Rinse under warm running water. Pat dry with a lint-free cloth. That is the whole routine.
Skip the ultrasonic cleaner at home. It is fine for plain gold, but on a prong-set silver ring it can loosen stones over time. We use them in the workshop for pre-set inspection, not for customer maintenance.
Store it alone
Sterling silver scratches against other jewelry. Toss your ring in a drawer with your keys and your other rings and it will pick up micro-scratches on the high polish. Keep it in the small pouch it shipped in, or in a separate compartment. Silver also tarnishes in air, which is why a sealed pouch matters more than you think.
When to send it back to us
If a stone ever feels loose (tap it against your teeth; it should not click), send it back. We re-tip prongs and re-tighten settings for a small flat fee. If the plating wears thin on the high edges (usually 18-24 months of daily wear), send it back for re-plating. The first re-plating is free for rings bought from us.
What not to do
- Do not use toothpaste as a polish. It is abrasive enough to scratch silver.
- Do not spray perfume directly on the ring. Spritz, wait 30 seconds, then put the ring on.
- Do not use silver dips on plated jewelry. They strip the plating along with the tarnish.
- Do not try to force a bent prong back yourself. Bring it to us; we can reshape it without losing the stone.
Moissanite lasts forever. The silver around it lasts a decade with care. The difference between a ring that looks new after five years and one that looks tired after one is five minutes a week, not an expensive cleaning solution.
