The most memorable gift we have watched someone open was a small envelope. Inside was a voucher for a bespoke ring, a photograph of a wax carving from a previous commission, and a handwritten note: "Pick the stone, I'll pay." The recipient did not get jewelry that day; she got a future consultation, and that turned out to be better than a pre-chosen ring. A bespoke gift is an experience, and like any experience, it needs timing and wording to land.
Why a voucher beats a pre-chosen piece
Buying a ring for someone else is risky. The finger size, the style, the stone preference: all three are easy to get wrong. A bespoke voucher lets the recipient make those choices with the atelier, while the giver sets the budget and the occasion. It also solves the proposal problem: you can present the voucher, propose, and then design the ring together, which is how many couples prefer it anyway.
For anniversary gifts specifically, our notes on bespoke anniversary gifts that commemorate a story cover the themes, initials, coordinates, birthstones, that work well as a voucher. The family birthstone route is covered in birthstone combinations.
Lead times you must plan around
A bespoke commission takes four to eight weeks from first consultation to finished piece. Add a week for stone sourcing if you want a particular shade. If the gift is for Christmas, the latest safe voucher consultation is early November, and the latest casting order for delivery by 20 December is the first week of November. For a proposal, we recommend gifting the voucher in December and designing the ring together in January; you avoid the Christmas rush and the recipient is part of the process.
We also offer a sneak preview service: a wax or 3D proof photograph you can show on the day, even though the finished piece arrives later. That way the gift feels concrete, not theoretical.
How to word the voucher
A good voucher says three things: the budget, what it can be spent on, and when it expires. We issue all of ours with a 12-month validity, a clearly stated value, and a line that the recipient can upgrade (paying the difference) if they fall in love with a more expensive design. We do not issue vouchers that are restrictive (only solitaire rings), because the whole point is that the recipient chooses.
Because every voucher leads to a hallmarked, disclosed piece, we follow the same accuracy rules on description as the FTC Jewelry Guides: the voucher wording names the metal, the stone type, and whether stones are lab-grown or natural. For corporate or retail gifting, our wholesale voucher programme lets retailers sell experience vouchers with a fixed margin. The regulatory side is straightforward: because the voucher is for a future bespoke service, it must state expiry and refund policy clearly in line with consumer protection rules, and we handle that paperwork for the retailer.
Delivering the experience
The gift moment is partly theatre. We recommend presenting the voucher in a small box with a photograph of the workshop, a card explaining the consultation, and a note that says when to book. We handle the booking email directly with the recipient so the giver does not have to.
If the recipient cannot visit in person, our notes on working with an atelier remotely by video cover the same process on a screen; wax proofs, stone sourcing and approvals all happen by email. And for the practical side of what to bring, our checklist in what to bring to a design consultation is something we email to every voucher holder.
FAQ
Can I buy a voucher for someone else to design with me?
Yes. Many of our vouchers are bought by one partner and redeemed as a joint consultation. The voucher can be in either name; the budget is what matters.
Does the voucher cover the full cost of a piece?
It covers the value you choose. Recipients can top up if they want a larger stone or a more complex setting, and we show them that option at the consultation.
What if the voucher expires?
Our vouchers run for 12 months. If the recipient cannot use it in time, we extend once for free; we would rather make the piece than keep the money.
Can I get the voucher delivered in time for Christmas?
Yes. Vouchers are issued by email within 24 hours of purchase, and we can post a printed copy in a gift box on request. The finished piece, however, needs the lead time above; that is why the voucher, not the ring, is the Christmas gift.
Give the gift of a process, not a guess. Purchase a bespoke voucher online and we will post or email it in time for the date you choose. The recipient books a consultation, designs the piece, and we deliver it finished and hallmarked. Retailers: our wholesale gift-voucher programme turns your foot traffic into bespoke commissions; ask for the trade terms and margin schedule.
