Engraving Poetry on a Wedding Band: Ideas and Limits

A groom once asked us to engrave the entire first stanza of a Mary Oliver poem on the inside of a 4 mm band. The stanza is thirty-nine words. The inner circumference of a size 10 4 mm band is about 58 mm of usable curved space. At the smallest legible engraving size (0.8 mm), that fits roughly fourteen words, not thirty-nine. We found the four words that carried the stanza, and the ring meant more for being honest about the space. That is the job of poetry engraving: compression, not transcription.

How much text actually fits

Usable inner circumference depends on ring size and band width. A 6 mm wide band on a size 9 finger fits about 20 to 25 short words in a clean serif. A 3 mm half-round band fits 8 to 10 words. We measure the exact band before quoting, because the inner curve is not a flat page. For the broader band context, our notes on bands that match but not match cover width and profile choices that affect engraving space.

Fonts that survive decades of wear

Serif and plain sans-serif age best because the line weight is even. Script fonts look beautiful on day one but the thin strokes wear first, especially on the inside of a band that rubs against the neighbouring finger. We use a fine-point hand engraver, not a rotary machine, so the lines are V-cut and hold the polish. The metal itself matters: 18k gold is softer and takes finer script; 14k is firmer and suits bolder serifs. To understand why, our reference on the karat system for gold explains the alloy trade-off between hardness and malleability.

Lines clients actually choose

The most popular inscriptions are not full poems. They are the short, loaded fragments: coordinates of the proposal, a line from the song that played at the first dance, a parent's handwriting, or simply "still" after ten years. We keep a folder of approved examples and redraw handwriting scans to engraving-ready vector art. If you are thinking of the band as the first of a longer story, our anniversary gifts that commemorate a story shows how clients extend the engraving theme across later pieces.

What engraving costs and adds in time

Inside engraving on a finished band is a flat fee of 40 to 90 depending on length and font, and it adds three to five working days. Handwriting conversion adds another 30 and a proof. We always send a digital proof before the engraver touches the gold, because the band cannot be re-polished back to blank once the line is cut. If you are ordering the band itself, our cost breakdown shows where the engraving line sits in the total.

Outside engraving as a deliberate choice

Some clients want the inscription visible, not hidden. Outside engraving on a flat band face (a date, a crest, a single word) is a different job: it is exposed to soap, hand sanitiser, and desk edges, so we cut it deeper and finish it under a thin lacquer for pieces worn daily. Trade partners: our wholesale engraving add-on lets your store offer inside text, handwriting conversion, and outside crest work on any blank band we supply.

A common request is to engrave a date in Roman numerals, or coordinates to four decimal places. Both fit, but both need the same measurement pass: a date like 14·VI·MMXXIV takes about 18 mm on a 0.9 mm font, and coordinates at 43.61 latitude take roughly 22 mm. We draw both on a template of the client's exact band before quoting, because a line that looks short on paper wraps further than expected on a curved inner wall. For the band itself, our note on men's ring metal choices explains how 14k versus 18k affects how fine the engraving can go.

FAQ

Can you engrave my own handwriting?

Yes. Send a clear scan on plain paper, no shadows. We vectorise the strokes, adjust them to engraving weight, and send a proof before cutting.

Will the engraving wear off?

Inside engraving rarely wears off because it is against the neighbouring finger, not the desk. Outside engraving can fade over a decade of daily wear; we re-cut it as a paid service.

Can I add engraving to a band I already own?

Yes, as long as the inner wall is flat and at least 2.5 mm wide. Rounded comfort-fit bands can still be engraved, but the font size is slightly reduced.

Do you engrave in other languages?

Yes, including Cyrillic, Arabic, Japanese, and Hebrew. We require a typed transliteration and a native-speaker proof because engraving errors are permanent.

Have a line, coordinates, or handwriting in mind? Send it over with the band size and width. We will measure the exact inner space, send a proof, and quote the engraving as a flat add-on. Retail partners: our private-label engraving service turns your blank-band orders into personal, ready-to-gift pieces.
