Customers imagine custom jewelry as a mysterious process. It is not. It is five mechanical steps, each of which you can see. Here is exactly what happens to a custom order at our bench, from the first sketch to the parcel on your doorstep.
Step 1: The brief (day 0-2)
You send us whatever you have: a sketch on a napkin, a Pinterest board, a screenshot from another brand, or a paragraph describing the ring in your head. We reply with questions about finger size, metal tone, stone size and budget. We quote a fixed price at the end of this step. No work begins until you accept.
Step 2: The CAD render (day 3-5)
Our designer builds a 3D model of the ring in CAD. You receive two or three rendered images from different angles, with the stone type and size marked. This is the cheapest moment to change anything. Move a prong, widen the band, swap a halo. One revision round is included. After the render is approved, changes become expensive because the model has to be rebuilt.
Step 3: 3D printing and casting (day 6-9)
The approved CAD is printed in wax on a 3D printer, then cast in 925 sterling silver using the lost-wax method. The raw casting looks rough and slightly yellow. Our caster cleans it up, files the sprue, and smooths the inside so the ring is comfortable on the finger.
Step 4: Stone setting and finishing (day 10-12)
A bench jeweler sets the GRA moissanite by hand, prong by prong. The prongs are then trimmed, shaped and polished so they do not catch on fabric. The inside of the band is polished to a comfort fit. This is the step that separates a stock ring from a hand-built one: the prongs are rounded, not sharp, and the band sits flat against the finger.
Step 5: Plating and QC (day 13-15)
The ring goes to our plating line, where it is coated in rhodium, 18K yellow gold or 18K rose gold at the thickness you chose. It then comes back to the bench for QC: we check every prong with a loupe, pull-test the setting, measure the size on a mandrel, and photograph the finished ring next to its GRA certificate.
Step 6: Shipping (day 15-18)
The ring ships in a small jewelry box with the GRA card, a polishing cloth and a sizing receipt. Shipping to most countries takes 7-14 days tracked. If the size is off when it arrives, we re-size it once free.
A custom ring takes about three weeks from first message to your hand. If a seller promises a custom ring in three days, they are shipping stock under a custom label. Real bench time has a minimum.
