A client came in with a printout of runway earrings that dangled 90mm from the lobe. They looked extraordinary in the photo. We put a mock pair on her ears and within ten minutes she was rubbing her lobe. The earlobe had stretched and the post was pulling forward. That is the lesson long drop earrings teach: proportion and weight are not details-they are the design. A 70mm drop that looks like a sculpture in a photo is a two-hour piece on a real ear. The bespoke brief is to get the drama without the discomfort.
Proportion: face, neckline and drop length
The drop length should echo the face shape, not fight it. A long, narrow face reads best with a drop that stops at the jawline (30-50mm); a round face reads best with a slightly longer drop (50-65mm) that draws the eye down. Above 65mm, the earrings start competing with the neckline and the collarbone. We treat 50mm as the practical ceiling for daily wear and 70mm as the event-wear ceiling. The stone weight on the earring matters as much as the drop length, because every gram sits on the lobe. For the related neckline logic, see necklace design by face and neckline.
Weight and the earlobe limit
The average earlobe supports about 5-7g per ear comfortably. Beyond that, the post tilts forward and the lobe stretches over years. Long drops hide their weight well-a 60mm earring can feel light if it is hollow tube rather than solid cast. We use hollow tube for drops over 45mm, which keeps the pair under 6g total. Solid cast drops look richer but should stay under 35mm for daily wear. If the client has stretched lobes, we move to a leverback or clip rather than a plain post. For the wardrobe-building angle, see from studs to drops.
Closures: leverback vs hook vs post
Post with butterfly. The lightest closure, but the least secure. Good for drops under 30mm. We use it rarely for long drops because the butterfly can slip off during a long evening.
Leverback. A hinged closure that clicks shut. Adds about 0.5g but stays on. We recommend leverback for any drop over 35mm, especially for event wear where the client will be moving, dancing or hugging.
French hook. Elegant but slips. We reserve it for drops under 25mm or for clients who actively want the soft, undone look. For setting ideas, see bespoke hoops and drops. And for gemstone versions, see custom gemstone earrings.
What the quote holds
A pair of bespoke long drops breaks into: the metal (30-40%), the stones (30-50%), and the pair-setting labour ($140-260, because earrings must match in weight and length to within 0.5mm). Hollow tube construction adds $40-60 but is what makes a 60mm drop wearable. We always quote the finished weight on the pair, because that number is what the client will actually feel on the ear.
Styling long drops with hair and necklines
A long drop is half jewelry and half styling. Hair length decides whether the earring is seen at all: shoulder-length hair hides a 50mm drop unless it is swept back, so clients with long hair often choose a slightly wider or brighter stone to read past the hair. Necklines matter too. A 60mm drop competes with a high crew neck and reads as clutter; the same drop on an open neckline, a V or an off-shoulder dress, frames the face exactly as intended. We ask clients what they actually wear day to day, not what they see on a model. A pair designed for event wear should be quoted as event wear, and a pair designed for the office should sit under 40mm.
FAQ
How long is too long for daily-wear drop earrings?
Above 55mm, we treat them as event rather than daily wear. Daily drops live at 30-50mm, where they do not catch on collars, phones or shoulder-length hair.
Will long drops stretch my earlobes?
Over years, anything over 7g per ear can. Hollow tube construction and leverbacks keep the weight down and the post vertical, which minimizes stretching.
Should both earrings match exactly?
For bespoke long drops, yes within 0.5mm length and 0.2g weight. Mismatched drops are a look, but they read as deliberate asymmetry; if you want that, tell us at the consultation so we design the pair as two pieces rather than a matched set.
Can long drops be made in platinum?
Yes, but the density of platinum (specific gravity 21.4) makes a 60mm solid drop heavy. We hollow-tube platinum drops or switch to palladium (specific gravity 12.0) for long designs.
Want long drops that look dramatic and stay on? Book a 20-minute sitting. Bring the earlobe holes (we can check stretch on the spot) and two reference photos; we will sketch a 45mm and a 60mm version and quote both in writing within 48 hours. Trade retail partners: our earring-weight and closure guide gives your staff the 5-7g rule so customers leave wearing pieces they can keep on.
