A client sent us a scan of a hospital wristband: her husband-to-be had scrawled his name on it the day they met, eleven years earlier. She wanted that exact scrawl inside her band, not a neat version. That is the whole point of handwriting engraving. The flaws are the memory. Neatening it up defeats the purpose, but shrinking a real signature down to fit a 4 mm band without losing the loops is a craft problem, not a scan-and-print job.
Scan the original correctly before anything else
Phone photos will not work. We ask for a scan at 600 dpi in black ink on plain white paper, with no shadows and no creases. If the original is a photo, a napkin, or a worn letter, we redraw it in vector form by hand, tracing each stroke rather than running an OCR. We cover the same prep work in inside-band poetry and inscription choices. The redraw is what keeps the character of the handwriting while removing the background noise that would otherwise burn into the metal.
Know the size limit before you fall in love with a line
Inside a 4 mm comfort-fit band, the maximum letter height is about 1.2 mm. That fits roughly 12 to 15 characters, which is a date, initials, or a three-word phrase, not a paragraph. On a 6 to 8 mm band you can fit 2.5 mm letter height and a short sentence. Outside engraving on a flat-top band allows the largest size because there is no curve to fight. We scale the traced handwriting in CAD and show you a printout held against your finger before we set the machine.
Machine versus hand engraving for signatures
A hand-engraved signature has more personality but less accuracy. A CNC or rotary-diamond machine engraves the vector trace to within a few hundredths of a millimetre, which is what a real handwriting commission needs. Hand engraving suits crests and monograms; it distorts a signature because the chisel cannot reproduce a hairline the way a 0.3 mm burr can. We cover the metal choice questions in matching wedding bands guide, but for handwriting, the metal matters less than the burr size.
Depth, filling, and lifetime legibility
Engraving inside a ring wears. A comfort-fit band rotates against the finger, and after twenty years a shallow engraving fades to a ghost. We cut handwriting to 0.12 mm depth, which is the working limit for thin bands, and we offer a black lacquer fill for inside engravings so the line stays visible. Outside engraving does not need the fill because it faces outward. The FTC Jewelry Guides require that any added substance be disclosed, so the lacquer fill is stated on the work order rather than hidden.
Storing a ring with inside engraving
Inside engraving fades faster when the ring rubs against other pieces in a jewellery box. We suggest a soft pouch or a divided tray, so the engraved surface does not grind against a wedding band or a watch. If the lacquer fill has faded after a few years, it can be refreshed in a ten-minute bench visit. We cover the same storage logic in care for handmade jewellery, but for an engraved band the pouch is the single step that adds years to the inscription.
FAQ
Can you engrave a child's handwriting on a parent's band?
Yes, and it is one of the most common anniversary commissions. We scan the child's writing on plain paper, vector-trace it, and scale it to the band. The wobbly lines are kept exactly as they are.
Will the engraving rub off over time?
Inside a comfort-fit band, the lacquer fill fades in three to five years and can be refreshed. The cut itself lasts the life of the ring, though it will soften with wear. Outside engraving on a flat top stays sharp for decades.
Can I see a proof before the ring is cut?
Yes. We print the traced signature at actual size on a sticker and apply it to a ring of your size so you can wear it for a day. We do not cut metal until you approve the proof in writing.
How much extra does handwriting engraving cost?
Inside-band handwriting in a single line runs from 40 to 90 depending on length and fill. Outside engraving on a flat-top band is priced per square millimetre and quoted once the trace is approved.
Have a letter, a note, or a signature you want carried for life? Scan it at 600 dpi and send it over. We will trace it by hand, print a life-size proof on a ring of your size, and only cut the metal once you sign off. Trade retailers: our engraving white-label pack includes the scan-prep checklist so you can collect the right file from clients on day one.
